As if you’d be anyone else, you must remind yourself from time to time how essential it is that ‘you do you.’ For most of us this idea is easier said than done. “Being yourself” seems like a no-brainer, but we complicate things when we put pressure on ourselves to be funnier, more spontaneous, or more daring… or really more of anything that’s not natural. These ideas rob us of ever feeling content with ourselves and can lead to some pretty crummy down days. Instead of comparing ourselves to what we think we should be, let’s celebrate who we really are this summer.
Summer evokes an adventurous spirit, the excitement to take risks. It is the chance to be carefree outside of your comfort zone while letting go of any expectations for a specific outcome. All that you hope to achieve is to briefly let go of your 8-to-5 responsibilities and have fun no matter what you’re doing.
Grab your sunscreen and go for a spontaneous beach or pool day. Hop in the car and just drive. Take a hike with a friend. Sign up to learn a new skill you’ve always wondered about. Promise yourself you’ll sing at the next karaoke night, no matter how silly you look. Sit outside and talk with a close friend until you see the stars. Plan a trip out of town for the weekend to visit friends. Let yourself do what you really want to do. No matter what you dream of doing, don’t forget your sunnies and your camera. You’ll want to remember this.
The beauty of this silly phrase is that the meaning can be whatever you need it to be. Regardless of it’s definition, I hope this download is a subtle reminder to have the courage to be you.
