12 makers of christmas // morning ritual jewelry

Meet our last maker, a jeweler who makes simple yet charming staple pieces!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… an interview with Morning Ritual Jewelry! I can’t believe this is the last maker in our 12 Makers of Christmas series. It’s been just wonderful learning about everyone’s christmas traditions and how they balance work and creativity during the holiday season. We’ve met such a diverse group of makers, from textile designers and ceramicists to calligraphers and weavers, the talent from this group is overflowing, and today’s maker is no exception.

I first fell in love with Shayna’s visually concise jewelry over the summer, and wrote about it here. The clean-cut of her simple designs swept me off my feet. I also couldn’t help but love that she names her pieces after the industrial designers she draws inspiration from. Morning Ritual’s jewelry is so wearable and chic, it’s definitely at the top of my wish list. tell us a bit about what you do – your process, your materials, what inspires and drives you.

I am actually not a morning person at all… I find that I’m most creative late at night when it’s quiet and everyone is asleep. That’s when I can really focus. I usually start experimenting with the materials at hand to discover their limits, potential, and relationship with one another.

One challenge I give myself is: How do I design a structurally sound / wearable piece of jewelry using simple shapes and efficient construction. I’m inspired by modern architects like Mies Van der Rohe, who is known for the term “Less is more”. I guess you could say that I’m driven by the creative force of the universe – like riding a wave of energy.

what is your favorite holiday tradition?

Wearing my ugly Christmas sweater. Also participating in white elephant gift exchanges with friends because anything goes! The best white elephant gift I got was a Best of Hall and Oates CD.

what’s your favorite gift to give?

Food and/or alcohol. I love supporting other local Seattle businesses. Theo’s chocolates would be my go-to gift. Love their chocolates – they’re fair trade certified, organic, and yummy.

how do you maintain your creative process through the hectic holiday season?

Making to-do lists helps me prioritize tasks and get them outta the way. There is something motivating about crossing an item off your list with a pen as opposed to checking it off in an app. Also, power naps help me stay up late at night for my creative window.

any resolutions for the new year?

I do get those days when I’m stuck in the funk. But my resolution is to do something creative EVERYDAY even when I’m not in the mood, jewelry-related or not.
