Lately we’ve been spending lots of time working out on Joanna’s new deck that was sponsored by World Market (if you haven’t seen the transformation yet, you have to check out the reveal right this minute!) and after a long afternoon in the sun, my super-sensitive skin needs all the help it can get recovering from the much-needed rays. That’s why I decided to combine 6 super-hydrating ingredients to create the ultimate after sun lotion.
Growing up in South Florida, I know plenty about getting too much sun and have a few go-to components for my home remedies. First up is aloe! I was so happy to see this little spiky friend in Joanna’s backyard, the gel from it’s leaves offer immediate relief. Next, I threw in cooling cucumber, and super hydrating coconut and almond oils. Rounding out the lotion is the lovely aroma (and analgesic properties) of lavender essential oil, as well as the powerful anti-inflammatory, vitamin e.
Materials
- glass jar (I love this 1/5 liter glass Weck jar from World Market)
- 1/2 c. food grade coconut oil
- 3-4 drops lavender essential oil
- 1/4 c. fresh aloe gel
- 1 mL liquid vitamin e
- 1/2 c. almond oil
- small cucumber
Tools
- food processor
The first step is to prepare all the components that go into your lotion. Roughly chop half of your cucumber and blend in a food processor until you have an even puree.
Next, cut a large, thick aloe leaf as close to the trunk of the plant as you can. Slice lengthwise as if you’re filleting a fish and capture as much of the gel that runs out as you can. Alternatively, if you don’t have access to fresh aloe, you can find aloe vera gel at your local grocery store, or online here.
Combine 1 mL of vitamin E with your freshly harvested aloe gel, then add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Next, heat your coconut oil until liquid and stir in the almond oil.
Now for the fun part! Add your pureed cucumber, aloe gel mixture, and combined oils to your food processor and blend until opaque and frothy.
Decant your lotion into an air-tight jar and keep in the fridge for a cool, refreshing treat after a day lounging in the sun. (Bonus points: try frothing an extra couple of minutes in your food processor for added aeration!)
P.S. there’s a great sale going on over at World Market with some great outdoor deals, including up to 50% off ALL outdoor furniture!
