This won’t be news to long-time homeowners, but it’s a lesson I keep learning over and over and over again: house stuff is never actually finished. Case in point, our deck. Being a new homeowner, I thought I could simply put waterproof covers over our outdoor stuff during the winter months and everything would be ok… except it wasn’t, not at all. It turns out that someone had set up a home there in the winter months. Several someones, actually. I don’t even want to think about what they were, to be honest, but everything was destroyed. Lesson learned — the hard way. Thankfully, Article reached out with their new outdoor furniture line — wanna see our deck makeover??
The timing is perfect because I have a bit more of a focused vision for our outdoor space now. Our color palette is a bit simpler and more modern, focusing on black and white with pops of mint and terra cotta. In terms of materials, we simply wanted pieces that were durable and would last us a long time (no more unwelcome surprises, please). During the spring and summer months, we keep the French doors open as much as possible. Because the house is so small, this deck space essentially doubles our living space so we wanted it to be stylish and functional.
Sean and I sat down together with these goals in mind and selected our favorites from Article:
I really love the juxtaposition of the mint and white Dot Chairs against my black French doors — and they are comfortable. We’ve entertained a few times since they arrived and everyone ends up hanging at the table for hours. This is pretty much exactly what I’d hoped for when we put so much effort into the deck. And, really, it’s the simple things: these chairs are really affordable, come in great colors, and (most importantly for a small home) are stackable.
After learning our lesson, we opted for materials that are virtually indestructible, like the Nebula Dining Table. I loooove that the top is granite. The galvanized steel legs are a really nice modern touch, too.
And then there’s the Mira Work Table, basically my new BFF. If you’ve been following my Instagram Stories, you know that I’m all about gardening these days. I’ve used this work table for so many of my projects. It’s the perfect height for re-potting plants and creating cute succulent gardens. Plus, when we host, it’s a great surface for serving appetizers and drinks. I’m thinking of getting a second one for my studio because the shape and size is so perfect.
The dogs are also super stoked on our new deck situation!
This makeover has me so inspired to tackle more projects — I’ve been sketching out floor plans, gardens, and even brainstorming ways to update the fencing without replacing it. But first and foremost, our deck is a comfortable space again where we can hang out now that the sun is fiiinally coming back to Seattle! What do you think?
