Recently, I was out and about in Seattle and noticed a few gin and jam cocktails on bar menus. Is this a new thing? After a cursory Pinterest search, it appears not! Gin and Jams seem to be floating around quite a lot, which got me thinking. What if instead of using gin, I made it more my vibe by using rye whiskey instead? Meet the Spiced Rye and Jam, your new go-to fall cocktail that is sooo easy to make, but feels like you’re at one of those fancy hipster bars (do those keep popping up in your ‘hood? Cuz they do in mine!).

I’m definitely more of a rye fan than gin because I love that deep, spicy flavor that it imparts into any cocktail. And, boy, does this drink have spice! I upped the spiciness with a healthy sprinkle of cinnamon to really celebrate autumn, but you can skip that step if you want. Top the mixture with a bit of ginger beer for a nice, fizzy effervescence that can’t be beat.

Spiced Rye and Jam Cocktail
Ingredients
- 3 ounces apple cider
- 2 ounces rye whiskey
- 1 teaspoon sweet orange jam
- 2 ounces ginger beer
- sprinkle of cinnamon (optional)
- cinnamon stick
- orange peel
Instructions
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add apple cider, rye, jam, and sprinkle cinnamon over the top. Shake until well-mixed, about 30-45 seconds.
- Swipe the rim of the glass with the orange peel. Pour the mixture into a low ball glass and top with ginger beer. Garnish with orange peel and cinnamon stick (I suggest using this to stir the cocktail every once in a while because the jam will settle a bit).
