When people find out that I have two wiener dogs, they automatically assume that I adopted them both in an effort to assemble a whole pack of dachshunds. But the real story goes something like this: girl with wiener dog meets boy with wiener dog. They fall in love and blend their dog family into a sort of Brady Bunch situation — but with more barking and tail wagging. All joking aside, when I met Lucy, we connected immediately, thanks in part to my habit of bonding with her by offeringtreats whenever she came over with Sean. Now that we all live together in one beautiful swirl of small space living and dog hair, I love to spoil both of my pups with delicious, premium dog treats. My favorites? Treats that are kitchen-inspired!
Last week I shared this super-cute DIY terrazzo treat jar filled with Milo’s Kitchen® chicken jerky — Noodle and Lucy love them because they’re made with real chicken as the number one ingredient so they’re rich in protein — and this week I set myself the task of finding the perfect way to keep the treats at hand while incorporating the jar into my existing decor. After putting our heads together, the wiener dogs and I came up with this cool little dog treat station complete with a marble finish and a hook to keep their leashes nicely organized and ready for their daily walks. It’s the perfect thing to keep right outside your kitchen so you can treat your dogs while you’re whipping up a delicious snack to create a shared love of the kitchen with your furry four legged friends.
Tools
- hammer
- screwdriver
Materials
- 9 x 12″ wood plaque
- spray paint
- marble contact paper
- hook with screws
- vent clamp
- terrazzo treat jar
- small nails
Start by spray painting your hardware: the clamp, the hook and any screws or nails you’ll be using. You’ll want to do two or three light coats, allowing for dry time in between, so it’s good to start with a coat and then move on to the next steps while the paint dries.
Lay the wooden plaque on top of the unrolled contact paper. Cut around the edges, leaving a couple of inches of allowance on each side.
Peel the backing off the contact paper, and carefully center the wooden plaque in the middle of it. Trim excess contact paper so you’re left with about 1/2″ around.
Cut out a notch at each corner. This will ensure you don’t have overlapping edges for a more clean look.
Fold over each flap of contact paper, using your fingers to smooth it out as you go. The goal is not to have any air bubbles.
Now’s probably a good time to give that hardware a second coat of paint. Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Place the jar and the hook on the plaque to make sure you have a placement you’re happy with. Use a pencil to mark where you want to nail the vent clamp to the wood.
Then, unscrew the clamp and use one or two small nails to secure it to the plaque.
Finish by screwing on the hook and slipping the treat jar inside the vent clamp. And don’t forget to make sure that treat jar is nice and full.
The finished product is nice and light, so you can simply use some sticky picture-hanging strips to secure it to the wall—that way you don’t have to put any holes in your drywall.
And that’s all there is to it! I love having the cute terrazzo treat jar hanging in an easy-to-reach spot right by the kitchen so I can treat my two pups to some delicious treats. It’s only fair that if Sean and I are enjoying a yummy snack in the kitchen talking about our day, that we include our pups in the moment since they really are part of our family. There is truly nothing better than bonding in the kitchen with the ones that you love — even if they have four legs!
When we’re finally able to renovate the kitchen (fingers crossed for this year!), I’m even planning to have a spot reserved for the dogs as a really cute feeding station. They usually supervise me while I’m cooking, so it’s only fair that they get a spot, too! I’m also planning to have a designated dog shelf in our new pantry, keeping it fully stocked with Milo’s Kitchen® chicken jerky, of course.
