my 5 most versatile wardrobe pieces

One of the most important things I think I can do for my closet right now is pick out the things that are most versatile. I totally understand that wearing the same thing over and over again can feel a little blah. And who wants blah? Not me. This is why I’m teaching myself to reimagine and mix and match. It’s actually really fun and kind of makes me feel like I’m shopping my own closet. It’s amazing the combinations you can find when you actually stop to look at what you already own.

So I’m going to challenge you to spend a little time in your closet. Pick out your most versatile items and see what kind of combos you can come up with!

Here are my five most versatile wardrobe pieces:

Classic jeans

This may be completely unoriginal, but I am THE jean girl. They’re just so damn easy for me. You can wear them over and over with a million different things and every time you’ll look different. If you don’t get excited at the idea of jeans, maybe you haven’t found the right brand/style yet. I highly recommend trying Frame or Madewell denim. Both brands are my ‘holy grail’ when it comes to fit, style, and wash. Your life will never be the same.

A classic black dress

The dress I’m wearing here is probably the most versatile dress I’ve ever owned. It can be dressed up or down. I went with a more casual vibe in these photos with my Converses, but it could definitely be worn with a cute block heel for a wedding or shower. Or if you’re just a dress person, this can pretty much work for any possible event you could think of. Versatility, friends, it’s great!

White and black tops

Want to know something I’ve learned recently? Things are a lot easier to mix and match when you have a neutral wardrobe. Now, please don’t interpret that as me saying to never buy color or fun prints because those things are awesome. I just seem to be naturally drawn to white or black breezy tops, which are great for layering or adding an accessory to make them look different each time I wear them.

Neutral clogs or mules

You’ve probably spied me wearing clogs a few times like here and here. And that’s because they work with everything. These kinds of shoes making a comeback and being super trendy the last year has made me so happy because there’s a ton of great options out there. You literally can’t go wrong. If you’ve been on the lookout for these styles, I recommend these:

A good leather jacket

Maybe leather jackets aren’t your jam, but if they are, invest in a very solid one. You will legit have this jacket for the rest of your life and never run out of outfits to pair it with. I have had really good luck at thrift shops finding cool vintage options like the one I’m wearing in this post. I mean look at that fringe! Pro tip: if leather isn’t your thing, try a bomber jacket—they’re just as versatile.
