I am definitely what you would consider a workaholic. I am really, really lucky — I love what I do and I am able to dedicate a lot of time and energy to it. The challenge with working for yourself, though, is the possibility of creative burnout, something I have struggled with in the past. Long hours don’t always equal lots of inspiration. I’ve worked for myself for 4 years, so by now I know what helps me maintain my creativity and stay inspired. One thing that will always inspire me is working in a space that smells great. Today I partnered with Air Wick® to share how fragrance inspires my creativity, especially with their new:
Essential Mist Diffuser ™
Long ago I discovered that I am significantly more productive if I work away from my home, so now I have a studio space. It is like my little corner of the world away from everything. I’ve equipped it so that the space is functional, but also comfortable: ergonomic chairs, solid desks, and even comfortable rugs so I can walk around barefoot!
From any early age, fragrance was important to me. I’d try on my mom’s perfume and let my imagination take off. I guess that’s a habit that has stuck with me! I keep my Essential Mist Diffuser ™ on the studio shelves so that it is central to the space. The Diffuser itself is elegant, compact, and portable, making it perfect for my space (which is always changing depending on our latest photoshoot). The Essential Mist Diffuser ™ contains natural essential oils that are then dispersed in a fine mist. I also love that I can control the fragrance intensity and frequency of the mist. When I know I’ll have a styling client in the studio, I increase the mist so that it smells inviting in the studio.
The diffuser has a few different settings for either a shorter or longer pause between mists, too:
- Low setting: 4 seconds of mist with 17 minute pauses between mists
- Medium setting: 5 seconds of mist with 12 minute pauses between mists
- High setting: 6 second mist with 10 minute pauses between mists
And if you’re like me, half the fun is picking a fragrance!
There are 5 essential oil fragrances:
- Lavender & Almond Blossom
- Fresh Water Breeze
- Mandarin & Sweet Orange
- Peony & Jasmine
- Cinnamon & Crisp Apple
Depending on my mood, I can change out the Refill. To change the Refill, pop off the cover, gently pull down on the Refill that is already inserted, then remove the cap and snap in the new one. You’ll hear a click when it’s pressed in all the way. Then replace the cover and twist the cap back on the original Refill.
Most of the time I use the Lavender & Almond Blossom because I love how it smells both fresh and soft at the same time. This fragrance is great for more relaxed tasks, like writing and answering emails. When I’m really on a deadline and know that I need to get inspired in a hurry, I switch things up and insert the Mandarin & Sweet Orange refill. There’s something about citrus that is so energizing! It’s exactly what I need to really get the creative juices flowing, especially when I’m working on a photoshoot.
How do you maintain your creativity? I’d love to know, so let me know down in the comments!
