Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite season. I love the crisp air and the changing leaves, I love the hot apple cider and cozy blankets, I love making hearty soups for dinner and I love updating my closet with all sorts of cool, cozy things. At the beginning of fall, more than any other transitional season, I really crave an update to my wardrobe. It’s a great time to add to your stockpile of basics as well as to try out a few new trends. Joanna asked me to curate a list of fall fashion trends because she’s still on her No Shopping Challenge kick. So with that in mind, I’ve highlighted six key fall fashion trends with a round-up of great options for each… because you know ya gurl loves to shop!
The Fall Fashion Trends You’ll Want to Wear ASAP:
Fall Trend #1: Shearling
Chunky knits are great and all, but this fall I’m turning towards shearling to get my fix of cozy texture. Feel free to go with genuine or faux shearling depending on your budget and/or moral convictions — there are wonderful options for both. The great thing about shearling is that it’s super versatile. It can lean glam or sporty, depending on the styling (but it’s super cozy no matter what). Also I love how a teddy bear coat can perk up any look, no matter how casual!

Fall Trend #2: Western
If there’s one fall fashion trend I’m most excited about right now, it’s this one. You can go the prairie girl route with it, like the Batsheva dress above, or you can veer more into cowboy territory with denim and boots — the world is your hay-strewn oyster! All I want to wear right now are ruffle-trimmed midi dresses a la Dolores from Westworld, but I love pairing them with a leather jacket and maybe some sneakers to keep the look from feeling too costume-y.

Fall Trend #3: Animal Prints
It’s time to get wild, y’all! Animal prints are all over this season, and I love that they can be used in place of neutrals to spice up an otherwise simple outfit. I’m currently partial to snake print, but zebra also feels fresh especially when rendered in a cool, graphic knit. If you’re a little nervous about giving off Fran Drescher vibes (which are totally on trend right now, by the way), dip your toe in with a little handbag or heel.

Fall Trend #4: Plaid
Yes, plaid is a perennial fall contender, but it’s playing an even bigger role in wardrobes this year. Tartan, Buffalo, Prince of Wales, Black Watch — I. am. here. for. it. all. A great wool topcoat or slightly oversized blazer is a wardrobe classic that you can layer again and again and is worth investing in. Then you can sprinkle in a few more playful pieces like a taffeta dress or a metallic puff-sleeve top that will be fantastic for holiday festivities.

Fall Trend #5: Corduroy
This corded velvet fabric hails from the English countryside, but you may know it better from its turn as texture du jour in the ’90s. There’s something at once humble and luxurious about corduroy, and I love that dichotomy, so I’m decidedly happy it’s back. A simple accessory is a great way to add the texture to your fall wardrobe, but if you’re ready to really commit, a tailored blazer or a vintage-inspired jumpsuit is a great way to go.

Fall Trend #5: Hair Accessories
It’s the new frontier of adornment and it’s time to do some exploring! Consider a simple crystal barrette. Try out a beaded hair clip styled with perfectly mussed waves. Rock a bold headband like you’re Blair Waldorf or knot a chic scarf over your hair like you’re Jackie O about to hop into a vintage convertible and cruise into your new role as international style icon. Added bonus: these baubles are great for dressing up second-day hair.
