You’re probably wondering why on earth I am tackling another makeover so soon after our kitchen reveal… and whose house this is! Recently, I was given the opportunity to team up with Amazon Home to makeover a space. After perusing the mix of furniture and decor they offer, I knew exactly what I wanted to revamp. I asked Andy, my soon-to-be father-in-law, if I could transform the living and dining rooms in his Craftsman house — and thankfully he said yes! Let’s dig into the before photos + the design plan.

The Craftsman House: A Modern Traditional Living & Dining Room Makeover
Say hi to Sean’s dad, Andy! He and I are basically best friends. He lives 3 blocks away from us and is constantly a source of wisdom and belly laughs. Even when Sean isn’t around, he and I still hang out… especially during football season! He’s retiring this year, so I wanted to help him fix up his Craftsman house so that it’s comfy and cozy for him.
Andy’s home has also been the dumping ground for a lot of old stuff. You’ll notice that there’s just a lot of… clutter. I’m not going to throw labels around, but there is definitely a tendency to keep things that don’t need to be kept. So we’ve been sorting through lots of heirlooms and junk, determining what can go. It’s been a really eye opening experience for him and, honestly, I’m so grateful that we have this opportunity to help make a better home for him.

The Before Photos
To be totally honest, Andy’s Craftsman house isn’t in the best shape. The bones are very, very good, but he’s had some health problems that have prevented him from properly maintaining it as much as he’d like. Now that we’re paused on renovations at our bungalow, Sean and I will be helping Andy more and more with his home.
Thankfully, most of the work that needs to be done is cosmetic. We have to patch cracks in the plaster, for example. I wish we could refinish his original hardwood floors, but that is a project for another day! I’m very excited to see how a fresh coat of paint brightens up this space, too.

You can see that there is a decent sized entryway by the front door, so we’ll be creating a welcoming area there. Oh, and creating a nicer landing zone for mail! Then, in the living room, I am going to create a cozy reading nook for Andy, complete with task lighting. He reads a ton, so having a spot for that is a priority. Then, there will be a comfortable sectional sofa — it will go in the spot that has the most amazing afternoon sunlight, perfect for napping.

The living room flows into the dining room, so I am tackling that space as well. I want it to feel more like a traditional dining room that you’ll find in most Craftsman houses, so I’m changing things up a bit… Just wait til you see my plan for the ceiling!

We will be keeping some key pieces that Andy already has. The blue velvet chair, the amazing area rug (which belonged to Andy’s mother), and the vintage record player/credenza piece will all be staying. Plus, I’m going to pull some vintage art and family photos to decorate the walls.

The Floor Plan
For the most part, I am going to keep the floor plan the same. One ‘bigger’ change is that I want to rotate the dining table so that there’s more walking room around it. The makeover will rely more on replacing old, worn out furniture and breathing new life into the space with decor, art, and paint.
The Design Plan
Amazon Home made it SO easy to find the right pieces for Andy’s space. They have 3 exclusive brands: Stone & Beam, Ravenna Home, and Rivet, each with a different design aesthetic. I wanted the space to feel updated, but still with traditional touches — especially because the architecture of the Craftsman-style details is so stunning! The best part is that the collections can blend seamlessly, too.
Also, let’s not forget how amazing Amazon Prime’s fast, free shipping is… and that the furniture delivery is no exception! Both Andy and I have been astounded to see furniture pieces arrive so quickly. Fast shipping like this really makes it so easy to pull off a makeover!
