Our 2020 Home Renovation Goals

Much to Sean’s chagrin, I am sharing our home renovation goals for 2020 today! Last year I made a major list… some of it got done, some didn’t. Between the wedding (I swear, I’ll share photos & videos of that soon) and my emergency surgery, we didn’t get as much done as we’d hoped. But nonetheless, I still wanted to share this post. It always helps to get things down and in writing. Gotta stay accountable, right?? So here is our list!

Sean is definitely one of those people who doesn’t ever totally finish a project and I am super Type A about finishing projects. So this home renovation goals list is always an exercise in hilarity and compromise. Here’s how we did with last year’s goals:

  • Finish the kitchen — CHECK! In case you’ve been living under a rock, catch up on allllll of the remodel updates, details, and big reveal here.
  • Tackle the front yard — haven’t even started.
  • Do more landscaping — does planting a new wisteria plant count?
  • Refresh the living room — CHECK!
  • Makeover our mudroom/laundry room — haven’t even started.

Finally finish the backyard, for real this time

The last time we really worked on the backyard was for One Room Challenge… and it never actually got totally finished. You’ll notice that the photos don’t show the back corner where the shed is… that’s because we never finished it! We still a portion of the old, moldy fence back there. Additionally, we need to finish trimming out the fence where it did get “finished.”

Then, I’d love to put some pavers down around the shed, clean up the backdoor area (because that got trashed during the kitchen renovation), finishing trimming the exterior of the new kitchen window, and FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY make a chicken coop that is cute and totally functional for our needs.

A front yard makeover

Peeling paint, chainlink fence, rotten front porch… we’ve got it all out front. The house exterior and, more specifically, the front yard have barely gotten any attention aside from the new roof and my planter beds. I want to re-paint the exterior, rip out the chain link, put in a picket fence, and do some more landscaping.

We have also been talking about trying to enclose the front porch so that there’s more of an entryway into our home… especially in winter months so that our living room stays warmer! Right now, it feels like our front door is always wide open and that we’re heating the neighborhood.

The plan for this renovation goal is to add curb appeal to our home. We’re still debating turning the bungalow into an Airbnb. Even if we plan to stay here longer, curb appeal is always important. Plus, our house has SO much potential to be really, really cute!

Makeover our mudroom/laundry room

I totally sighed as I typed this… probably the most neglected part of the house, our mudroom and laundry room is the tiniest space. Yet it sees the most use! I dream of swapping out our traditional water heater for a tankless, on-demand water heater — especially one that can be mounted to the exterior of our house. That would help us gain SO much storage area next to our washer and dryer. Ideally, it would be amazing to move the furnace over to that corner as well… but that is probably not worth the money or effort, if I’m being totally honest.

I should probably add a full bathroom renovation to this list, but given how stressful the past few years have been, I am hesitant. We did just do a mini makeover of the space back in September and that’s been working well for us. That being said… everything I go into the bathroom, I wish it matched the aesthetic and level of completion of the rest of our tiny bungalow.

So those are our 2020 home renovation goals. Last year, I totally thought the list was achievable, but looking back… that’s a different story. I’m really grateful that we did get a lot done though, including the living room refresh and finally finishing the kitchen remodel.

Have you made a list of your home renovation goals? I’d love to know what you’re planning to tackle.
