Our Quick & Budget-Friendly Laundry Closet Makeover

On a whim a few weeks ago, I complained about our laundry closet to Instagram. All I’ve ever wanted is a proper laundry room and here I am with a laundry closet again… and in the dining room, nonetheless! So when Better Homes & Gardens exclusively at Walmart challenged me to refresh a space that I use daily, I knew it was time to tackle this small, but important space. Let’s break down all of the changes I made!

A Budget-Friendly Chic Laundry Closet Makeover

For such a small space, we actually did a LOT to make it more practical and stylish. Here’s a breakdown of how we refreshed the laundry nook:

Paint

I mean obviously, the biggest change is the color! I personally love closets that are painted a dark color because everything inside of them POPS so much more and it gives the space an instant upgrade. We decided to paint the interior of the closet at the same time as the rest of the cabin (more about that here) to more efficiently use our time!

Get organized

We use our laundry closet to store all of our cleaning supplies (which we conveniently stocked up on at Walmart while shopping for this makeover!). I really dislike seeing labels, so I keep our most-frequently used cleaning supplies in this caddy. Now it’s really easy to take the entire caddy to wherever I’m cleaning and then stow it when I’m done.

I also added a few fabric storage bins to the top shelf for overflow items and things we don’t need as often. Plus, I added extra non-slip hangers so that I can easily dry delicate items.

Efficiently organize laundry essentials

Speaking of product labels… I also decanted our liquid laundry detergent into a 2-gallon beverage dispenser. Now it is soooo easy to get exactly the amount of detergent I need (the little cup in the washing machine comes out, so I hold it up to the spout to fill).

We also use dryer balls as an eco-friendly alternative to dryer sheets. Now they are stored in a cute wire bowl so that they are easily accessible. If you miss the smell of dryer sheets, you can always sprinkle a few drops of essential oils on the balls.

Add lighting

Can you believe our laundry area didn’t have any light in it?? No one wants to do laundry in the dark, so thankfully we figured out that one of the outlets is controlled by the switch on the outside. Pink and green is one of my absolute favorite color combinations, so when I spotted this pink pendant light, I immediately knew it was perfect.

Upgrade our laundry baskets

We only had one laundry basket when we moved into the cabin and it was just not enough. These metal wire ones are great. I use the small one to hold delicates so Sean doesn’t accidentally ruin them in the wash. Speaking of delicates, definitely pick up one of these garment bags! I love mine.

Vertical storage

Because it’s such a small space and storage is at a premium, I used a simple set of wall hooks to organize hanging items like a mini ironing board and dusters. Then on the other side, I mounted our rechargeable vacuum to the wall next to the outlet. It definitely helps to keep things tidy.

Add essential oils

I’m not going to lie… our laundry closet did not smell amazing when we first moved in. But fresh paint and an essential oil diffuser have done wonders! I love the ceramic cover of this one. Plus it does a great job of filling the space with lavender mist.

Update the door hardware

And lastly, the doors. Bifold doors aren’t exactly my favorite, but we’re making do with them for now. I like them a lot more now that they are painted green! I updated the knobs with these simple and chic brass knobs to make them feel a bit more modern.
