You guys… I am so excited to share this post. Door hardware is one of my favorite finishing touches to choose for a newly completed renovation. It’s like the jewelry that finished a really, really good outfit. Plus, picking the right interior door hardware and hinges can literally affect your daily life. Personally, I know I got cranky from using the lever-style handles that were existing in the cabin… but not anymore now that I’ve fallen deeeeep into love with our new sets from Grandeur Hardware. So today I wanted to walk you through how I choose interior door hardware and hinges to complete any design project!

All About Choosing Interior Door Hardware and Hinges
Make them all match
This was a biggggg deal to me when it came time to select hardware for our cabin’s doors. None of our doorknobs in the bungalow matched and it used to drive me nuts. But I always told myself it was ok because we didn’t have that many doors. But now we are the proud owners of 7 interior doors! There are so many. So I made the decision that they all needed to match. I love knowing that it’s one more step toward creating a cohesive home environment.

Consider the architectural style of your home
When it comes to selecting the shape of your knob and the style of rosette (the back plate behind the knob), think about the style of your home’s architecture. For example, it might be weird to put something super sleek and modern into a historical mansion. For our cabin, I wanted a minimal rosette so that the knob would be the main focal point. And I personally prefer round knobs to any other shape. This is just a personal preference!
Invest in high quality hardware
It always shocks me when I see people skimp on door hardware. There could be a beautifully designed space, but then it’s finished with a cheap, builder-grade door knob? No way! Especially since this is something your hands literally touch every day. Grandeur Hardware’s quality is unparalleled in my book — which is why I reached out to work with them on the cabin again. We lived with their pieces for 5 years in the bungalow and I always loved the quality. Plus, they come with a lifetime warranty and are hand assembled in the US.

Don’t be afraid to try something new
I know that interior door hardware and hinges can be daunting and pricy, but I still want to encourage you to have some fun! For example, I have always loved porcelain door knobs. To me, they feel like a balance of old world charm, but can feel modern and fresh. So I decided to be bold and opt for black porcelain knobs. I absolutely LOVE them and they put a smile on my face every time I go into a room.
Coordinate the style of your door knob and hinges
I feel like door hinges are often overlooked, but can still make a big difference — especially in the functionality of the door. One of the reasons why I love Grandeur Hardware so much is because you can choose a decorative tip for your hinges. It’s like one more level of customization that you didn’t know you needed until now! I kept things simple and chose the Button Tip Round Hinges since our doors already felt pretty busy thanks to their moulding and green paint.

Double check your measurements before ordering
There are a few terms to know when it comes to selecting and ordering hardware:
- Backset: typically in 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″, this refers to the distance between the edge of the door to the center of the spindle
- Passage set: this is what’s typically used for interior doors like for a closet, hallway, or rooms where you don’t need a locking mechanism
- Privacy lock: this comes with a privacy pin on the rosette or plate which allows you to lock the door. It’s great for bathrooms, bedrooms, or anywhere you’d want to lock.

As for hinges, be sure to confirm whether your existing doors have rounded or square corners. Once you know the type of door knob and hinges you need, I always recommend double checking your measurements before ordering just in case!
