Disclosure: For this post I received gifted product from Avocado Mattress in exchange for review. All opinions are my own and always will be! Thanks for supporting content that keeps Jojotastic going.
It isn’t often that I get to trulyyy take my time when getting to know a product that’s been given to me for review. Typically I get a month or two. But when it comes to selecting the best mattress to recommend to you, I wanted to take my time and do it right. Avocado Mattress was kind enough to send us a new king size mattress when we moved back in September and I’m just posting my review, so you know I’ve given it my due diligence! I couldn’t be more stoked to share my Avocado Mattress review with you today — it’s just so good. Here’s why!
My Full Avocado Mattress Review — After Nearly a Year of Testing It Out!
I know that mattresses are a very personal thing that is affected by personal tastes and preferred sleeping position (side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper, etc). But I wanted to arm you with the information needed to make an informed decision, no matter way. We just happen to be totally obsessed with our Avocado Mattress, so here’s our experience!
The products we tested:
- Avocado Green Mattress, king size without the pillow-top
- Alpaca Wool Plush Mattress Topper, king size
- Avocado Green Pillow, king size
What is an Avocado Mattress made of?
As we work toward living a more sustainable, greener lifestyle in our new cabin, part of that comes with making swaps in our home. I wanted a green mattress made of natural and organic materials as part of this personal goal. A big part of that is because so many of the materials used in traditional mattresses are toxic and off-gas. No thanks!
Instead, an Avocado mattress is made of GOTS certified organic materials such as natural latex, wool, kapok fiber, and cotton. All of these natural materials add up to a mattress that is better for your health and the planet.
What are Avocado Mattresses’s sustainability practices?
The company has done it’s best to step beyond the mattress industry’s greenwashing by actively ensuring their products meet stricter guidelines. Avocado is a certified B Corp and Climate Neutral certified. Also, they donate 1% of revenue to environmental nonprofits through 1% For the Planet.
Additionally, Avocado mattress prioritizes ethical manufacturing. Each mattress, topper, and pillow is made in their own factory in California. The factory is powered by renewable energy and they are working toward being zero waste. Additionally, they grow and produce natural latex and even care for 200,000 sheep on their own farms! in 2020, Avocado Green Mattress went “carbon negative” with their carbon footprint (including their farms in India, the California factory, and shipping the actual products).
All About the Avocado Green Mattress + key features:
The mattress we chose is a hybrid consisting of three layers: a cover made of organic cotton and wool, a comfort layer made of natural latex, and a support core made of steel coils. The cover is button-tufted and is actually one of the most breathable options on the market. As someone who sleeps warm, that is a BIG deal to me!
I’m also really picky about coils and springs in mattresses. I hate feeling them and I’m happy to report that with the Avocado mattress, I don’t feel them at all. There are a lot of technical details as to why this is the case. Essentially, each of the 1414 coils are individually tuned then arranged in 5 different ergonomic zones. Not only does this equal a better night’s sleep, but it also helps with motion transfer, back pain, reducing pressure points and contouring to your body.
Here are a few more details:
- The option of a vegan mattress
- Considered to be a medium-firm sleep surface with a rating of 7/10
- 11 inches thick, including 3 inches of GOLS organic certified latex rubber foam
- ideal for back sleepers and stomach sleepers
- Handles on the sides, but no need to flip the mattress
As well as these important elements of investing in a new mattress:
- 1 year sleep trial
- 25-year warranty
- free shipping
- optional in-home delivery and set up
And my other obsession, the Avocado Green Pillow
Now, I’d like to introduce you to the secret star of the show: the Avocado Green Pillow. I AM OBSESSED. I’ve literally never used a pillow that I love as much as this one. Not only is it non-toxic, but it’s also got an adjustable fill. How awesome is that??
Basically, you can adjust the thickness and firmness of your pillow by adding or removing the kapok filling. Each pillow comes with a bag of extra fill so that you can customize your pillow accordingly. I recommend adjusting it after a few months so that you get to know it and what works best for you.
Do you recommend an Avocado Mattress?
Yes yes yes a million times yes. Sean literally calls it the best mattress we’ve ever had and he’s so right. It’s the perfect amount of firmness (and softness thanks to the alpaca topper we added). Before we ordered our mattress, I looked up other Avocado mattress reviews and read that some people consider them to be too firm. I haven’t experienced that, but wanted to highlight it to you. The alpaca topper definitely makes it softer for us while also providing much-needed insulation in the winter months.
Honestly, I’m just really happy that we finally have a mattress that we both agree is awesome. The comfort of sleeping on it is unparalleled and there are times where we literally sing a song about Avocado when we get into bed because it is just sooooo nice and luxurious. Maybe that’s the ultimate criteria for whether a mattress is good or not — ha!
