7 Tips for Creating Amazing Designs With Ice Dye
Love to try your hand at something creative? Then ice dye is the perfect craft for you! I can’t believe that I shared my first step-by-step tutorial for ice dyeing in 2015! I’ve learned a lot of ice dye tips and tricks since then. Even though I’ve tried many fabric dying techniques, ice dying continues to be one of my favorite crafts because the finished product is different every time you try it.
It’s also the perfect craft for summer because it’ll help you stay cool. I continue to get loads of questions about how to ice dye, so today I wanted to share a few helpful ice dye tips and tricks for achieving the best designs. With this guide, you’ll get seven easy tips that will help you make amazing art-quality ice dye pieces using different colors and combinations.
What is Ice Dye?
Ice dying is a fabric dying technique. The basic gist is: you put ice over prepared fabric, then sprinkle dye powder on it. As the ice melts, it slowly draws the dye into the fabric! It looks similar to tie-dye, but allows for more interesting, organic shapes, IMO!
Tips & Tricks for Achieving the Best Ice Dye Designs
1. Buy the Proper Supplies
Quality supplies are essential to creating bright, vivid colors on your fabric. My favorite dyes are the Jacquard Textile dyes. These dyes give rich, bright color and have a screw off tops, so they’re easy to store for later. You can dye any type of fabric you want, but natural fibers like linen or cotton will have the best result. Synthetic fabrics like polyester won’t take on the dye as easily. 2. Prepare Your Fabric
Before you start your ice dye project, make sure that you have prepared the fabric properly. Start by washing the fabric with a mild detergent and cold water in your washing machine. This will get out any dirt or oil that could affect the dye process. It’s also helpful to pre-soak the fabric for about an hour in warm water and soda ash before placing it in your ice dye mixture. The pre-soak will help to ensure even coverage of dye and a vibrant, colorfast design.
3. Choose The Right Colors for Your Ice Dye Design
Decide on the color scheme for your ice dye project before you begin. Because ice dye is so similar to tie-dye, I prefer bright colors, but more neutral tones can be really pretty too. Experimenting is one of the best parts of fabric dying, so don’t be afraid to mix and match colors. Also, to prevent the colors from blending together, stick with white fabrics as a base. This will allow the colors to be their brightest!
4. Use Plenty of Ice
Using plenty of ice is a key factor in creating a successful ice dyeing design. The ice is what creates the unique patterns and variations in the dye. The more ice you use, the more movement and variation you’ll see in your design.
When you sprinkle the dye powder onto the ice, the ice begins to melt and the dye begins to seep into the fabric. As the ice melts, it creates channels and pathways for the dye to follow, which results in the best part of ice dye: the unique and unpredictable patterns.
When I ice dye, I usually go to a local gas station or grocery store and purchase several bags of ice — the kind you’d get for a party. That way I know I will have plenty on hand. Then, I simply pile it up as much as possible before I sprinkle on the dye. In the photo above, I probably used 3/4 of a large bag of ice.
Using a lot of ice also helps to distribute the dye evenly across the fabric. The ice acts as a barrier between the dye and the fabric, which helps to prevent the dye from saturating one area more than another. This can result in a more balanced and visually appealing design.
Another benefit of using plenty of ice is that it can help to create a gradient effect in your design. As the ice melts and the dye seeps into the fabric, it can create a subtle shift in color from one area to the next, adding depth and interest. Don’t be afraid to be generous with your ice!
5. Experiment With Different Color Combinations
A successful ice dye design relies heavily on complimentary colors. Think about the color wheel and which colors are on opposite sides of each other. Those are complimentary colors– like red and green. For a more muted combo, try colors that are close together on the color wheel like yellow and green. Experimenting with interesting color combinations is half the fun!
6. Dye Powder Application Tips
To create a color gradient, sprinkle a lighter color of dye powder onto the ice in one area and a darker color in another area. As the ice melts and the dye seeps into the fabric, the colors will meld together into a gradient aka a pattern that goes from lighter to darker.
Another sprinkling technique that you can use is to create a tie-dye effect. To do this, first use rubber bands or string to tie the fabric in certain areas. Then, sprinkle the dye powder onto the ice. When the ice melts for this effect, and the dye seeps into the fabric, it creates circles similar to the traditional tie-dye pattern. Above all, remember that a heavier sprinkle of dye means a darker color! If you want lighter or pastel colors, use a light hand.
7. Be Patient!
After you’ve applied the dye, let the fabric sit for several hours (or even overnight) to allow the dye to fully absorb into the fabric. Covering the fabric with plastic wrap or a plastic bag can help keep the fabric moist and promote even dye absorption.
If you want bold, saturated color, let the fabric sit longer. If you are aiming for more pastel colors, rinse after a shorter period of time.
8. Bonus Tip: Ice Dye Cleanup
Ice dye can get messy! It can even stain your countertops, sink or hands if you aren’t careful. I personally like to do ice dye outdoors in the shade. This way, I don’t have to worry about splashes and the ice will melt more slowly than in the direct sun. I’ve also used a large, under bed Tupperware container to hold the dyed fabric, so I don’t risk staining my tub or sink. If you’re ice dying with kids, I’d also recommend gloves. It’ll save little hands from accidents and being stained for the next few days.
I also like to wash my designs in the washing machine without any other clothing or fabrics. That way if there is dye left after the initial rinsing, it doesn’t ruin my other clothes.
