Looking Back on Our First Year of Marriage

What I Learned from Our First Year of Marriage, a personal essay about the connection of being newly married, starting a new family, and building a new life together.

On Monday, Sean and I celebrated our first year of marriage and I have some feelings about it! Honestly, the first year passed incredibly quickly. So many people told me it would be the hardest year, especially as we figure things out… but that wasn’t really the case. Maybe because our first year of marriage included a global pandemic, my diagnosis with a rare genetic condition, and now us buying a new house together and moving… but I wanted to take some time to ‘put pen to paper’ and consider what this past year has meant for us as a couple.

BIG News: We’re Moving!

HUGE personal news: our tiny bungalow in Ballard, Seattle is officially on the market for sale! Learn more about our new home + why we're moving on jojotastic.com

I feel a little late in sharing this on the blog since it’s been all over Instagram, but… we’re officially moving! As of Friday, the bungalow is on the market and we have a contingent offer on a new home. It’s all happening so quickly because one day I got fed up with the city noise and dust, so I started looking at real estate in the mountains like I do every few months or so… and we ended up touring a house, loving it, and upheaving our entire life in the span of 2 weeks. Crazy, right? But also very, very us.

A Personal Update

a personal update: my diagnosis with Birt-Hogg-Dubé a rare genetic syndrome.

I’ve gotten a few messages lately from people checking in, asking if everything is ok because I haven’t been super-consistent with publishing posts lately… and the truth is that you’re right. I have been slacking lately because I’ve had some personal stuff going on behind-the-scenes. If you’ve read the blog for a while, you know that I consider you to be part of my online family. Because of that, I do my best to keep you informed with my life especially the good, bad, and ugly. To me, transparency is very important as a blogger. So it’s felt really weird to me that I’ve had a “secret.” But the time just wasn’t right. I didn’t want to cloud the important conversations we’re all having (and continuing to have!) about anti-racism. To me, talking about what was going on behind-the-scenes for me and my health felt incredibly selfish and, quite frankly, inappropriate. It just wasn’t the right now. I also needed some time to mentally process on my own. Blogging is this weird balance of constantly asking yourself what is too personal to share and what should be shared, no matter how personal, in order to help and connect with others.

Doing the Work: Resources to Support the Black Lives Matter Movement

Do the Work: Resources to Support the Black Lives Matter Movement

Hi friends, this is the only post I will be sharing this week. Throughout my life, I have benefitted greatly from my white privilege. It is time for me to get serious about doing the work and being a better friend and amplifier of Black people and POC. I am pausing all blog content and social media posts that do not serve this goal through June 7. Instead, I have started this list both for myself and for you so that we can better support the Black Lives Matter movement. For an even better list, check out this Google doc of anti-racism resources compiled by Sarah Sophie Flicker and Alyssa Klein.

My Week of Doing Puzzles

Personal Essay about taking a week of from work for self-care during quarantine and coronavirus. Finding peace and meditation in doing jigsaw puzzles. #quarantine #personalessay #stayhome #selfcare #wellness

I have probably rewritten the first sentence of this post and stared at the cursor for at least 30 minutes, not really knowing how to start off. You might have noticed that I didn’t share any blog posts last week and barely posted to social media… the truth is that I just needed a break. I had hit 2020 running with so many goals of launching my classes, exploring opening an online shop, writing some really in depth blog posts, and so much more. Especially because I took off time during the holidays to regroup, rest, and relax! I was so ready for 2020, optimistic even. But with the arrival of COVID-19, it feels so much like my motivation and drive have taken a hit. In just a week, I feel like my entire life got flipped upside down and everything shifted… and along with it, went my focus.

Our Mountaintop Wedding Photos & Video

Featured Video Play Icon

Our mountaintop wedding was just over 6 months ago and I am SO EXCITED to finally be able to share our photos and video with you today! I definitely needed a little bit of a pick me up (because of sheltering in place, morale is a little bit low), so it felt like the perfect time to share ALL of the details from September 7, 2019. BTW I included a vendor list for every aspect of our day. From my dress to rentals to Sean’s shoes… it should all be here! But leave a comment if I missed something and I’ll update the post. Without further ado, let’s look at our wedding photos and videos!!!

The video above is our full length wedding video! I also have the trailer linked below so you can watch it, too.

Happy 2020! I hope you had a great holiday break… I definitely did. The time off was much needed. In case you’re new here, I make an annual practice of sharing my yearly goals here on the blog as a way of staying accountable (here’s my 2019 list). I’m not really one to make resolutions, but instead prefer goals. That just works better for me. I also love to share with you guys because you’re always so wonderful about encouraging me, offering advice, etc. I LOVE it. So it makes total sense that my first post of the year is all about my 2020 goals. I’m also doing something different this year and adding a focus word, basically a concise idea of one concept on which I especially want to focus this year.
