book report

Last year, Dan gave me a Kindle and I must admit, if there is one electronic I use without fail every day, it’s the Kindle. I am obsessed. As a kid, I devoured books {mostly Nancy Drew…} at a rapid pace. Every weekend, my dad treated me to two new books and every week, by the following friday, I was chomping at the bit for more. Then, about two years ago I woke up and realized my attitude toward reading had relaxed; I was only lackadaisically reading a few books here and there until I fell asleep.

Well, the Kindle has totally changed that. My appetite for reading has been reinvigorated… In 2012, I read 14 books. I’ll admit, some of those books were part of some, ahem, well-known trilogies. Angry, tattoo-laden girls, teen adventure dramas, and sexual fantasies aside, I did read some ‘real’ literature, too. I plan to do the very same thing in 2013, but maybe with some more serious lit thrown in? Here’s my plan for 2013:

  1. re-read the entire Harry Potter series — at the urging of my Twitter buddy Mandy. I’m already under way and they are just as edible as the first time around!
  2. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
  3. Grace: A Memoir by Grace Coddington
  4. Sweet Tooth by Ian Mcewan
  5. Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
  6. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
  7. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
  8. Inside of a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz
  9. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemmingway — gotta mix in some classics!

Have any other suggestions? As you can see, I don’t have nearly enough listed here to get me through 2013.

PS – I’ve also curated my favorite suggestions over on Luvocracy — check me out here!

snow day!

Guys, I’m in Maryland and it’s snowing. And for the second time since I’ve been here! I just went for a rather frigid walk to exercise my yayas and break the cabin fever (yeah… it sets in quickly for me), but now what am I going to do with the day? Everything has been so hectic lately, so I might just settle in with my Kindle for a day of reading and relaxation. Can you tell I’m a lazy snow day type of person?

  2. Bacon caramel popcorn from New York Mouth
  3. Jewel-pop slippers from Anthropologie
  4. Kindle from Amazon — basically one of my favorite gifts from Dan, ever.
  5. Pom pom throw from Serena & Lily
  6. Slow brew chai tea from Dean & Deluca
  7. Brushed snow teacup from Leif

prepster

My style is a big grungy, a bit thrown together… but I still love to add elements of the preppy. And who does that better than Kate Spade? There is something totally intriguing to me about the lifestyle of the Kate Spade ‘girl’… I love how the brand has evolved over time and how much they value bold pops of color, graphic prints with hang lettering, and day drinking. She is a girl who knows how to have fun, but is also very classy about it. She knows what to do in any social situation, but isn’t a stick in the mud. I love that. And see that tote? it’s got me written allllll over it. You can be sure it’s on my wishlist come Christmas.

  1. The perfect tote for me.
  2. A USB stick disguised as a bow? Yes, please.
  3. I’m a huge sucker for red and pink together, just like on this dress.
  4. Ta Da! earrings, ’nuff said.
  5. The best packaging I’ve seen in a long, long time — lip crayons.
  6. Bedazzled and bejewel your wrist with this oversized, bling-tastic cuff.

fuzzy toppers

When it rains or turns chilly, I am the first person to break out the hats. I love a good chunky knit hat with maybe a pom pom or flaps with tassels on it! Something quirky with the perfect amount of personality. I lost my hat during my recent trip to Seattle, so I am on the hunt for a replacement. It seems like (faux?) fur is big every season and this year is not an exception. Here are a few I am loving right now!

think pink

It’s funny. I’m not a girly girl. I don’t luuuurve pink. Bright, sunshine yellow is actually my favorite color, but I have to say… lately I’ve been really loving hot pink (ahem, my blog) and even blushier versions of pink feel new and fresh to me. Here’s a round up inspired by a very fun, geometric tea towel.

a few good finds

I’ve been feeling like inspiration is lacking lately. Stagnant, lackadaisical.. whatever it is, I’m just not feelin’ it. Pinterest has offered up a few good finds though, all in a retro type palette. Mustard seems to be the color du jour and I am totally ok with that, especially when popped with cinnamon brown, true blue, and sea-foam.

art + food

As soon as I saw that homage to salumi poster on The Design Ark, I knew I had to do a round up. When I’m feeling uninspired about what to pack for lunch, I usually throw together some cured meats, stinky cheeses, and crackers. I call it my old Italian man lunch!

  2. Carlito’s Cocina fig ‘salami’ from New York Mouth
  3. Wooden handled knives from Old Faithful Shop
  4. Charcuteria plate from Anthropologie
