With the frenzy of summer dying down and Labor Day weekend behind us, it’s the perfect time relax and hang out with friends. Maybe have that backyard barbecue you’ve been meaning to do while the weather’s still nice, or take a long-overdue camping trip… whatever it is, we’re here to encourage you to live it up a little bit!
Even though here in the Pacific Northwest summer is nearing the end, it’s all the more reason to spend time outdoors while you can. Whether it’s camping or hanging out at the beach, I love bringing the Underwood wines in a can with me. To keep their tasty sparkling wine cool, we DIY-ed the perfect DIY koozies!
Tools
- x-acto knife
- cutting mat
- vinyl cutting machine (optional)
Materials
- heat transfer vinyl
- blank koozies
- free download: monstera leaf template
Start by printing out the monstera leaf template (listed above) and scaling it on your printer to the desired size. I found the right size for my koozies at around 80%, but print out a few test sheets until you find what you like best.
Next, you can either cut it out by hand, taping the printed pattern to your sheet of vinyl and tracing the outline with an X-acto knife, or run it through a vinyl cutter. For either method, make sure that the matte side of the vinyl is facing up. When finished, peel from the corner removing the excess vinyl and leaving your design behind.
Use your X-acto knife to go through and pick out any pieces of the pattern that didn’t come up when you peeled off the vinyl. Next trim the clear backing to size and arrange the pattern on your koozie as desired. Cover with a cotton cloth or fabric that can handle your highest iron setting.
Now for the fun part! Preheat your iron and make sure that the steam setting is off. Make sure your vinyl design is still in the correct position and press down on the cotton fabric over the vinyl for 10-12 seconds. (Every brand of vinyl is slightly different so make sure to check the time and temperature settings recommended by your manufacturer.)
Next, carefully peel the clear backing from the koozie. If you start to see parts of the design lifting, cover with fabric and press down with your iron for an additional 5 seconds, then continue peeling off the backing.
Allow your koozie to cool completely before use, then it’s party time!
