In case you missed my Instagram post, I recently discovered a new personalized shopping service called Spruce Up… and I’m kind of obsessed! As you all know soooo well by now, our kitchen renovation has taken over the house. It has also inspired me to revisit the decor in pretty much every other room in the tiny bungalow, so I was thrilled when Spruce Up wanted to partner on a post. I turned to their design and style experts to help me re-style the living room and make it feel super cozy, just in time for holiday guests!

When I first signed up for Spruce Up, I took their amazing free style quiz — and was totally blown away by how accurate it was! Even if you’re not quite ready to design your space, you should still sign up for the quiz cuz it’s eerily accurate and pretty fun to take. My results came back as Modern Minimalist with a touch of boho chic and I’ve never found a more accurate description of my decor style! From there, a design pro helped me to shop for pieces to complement our sofa, coffee table, side table, and arc lamp.

How to Create a Cozy Home for the Holidays

Switch out your pillows

Honestly, the fastest way to spruce up any space in your home is to change your pillows. And you don’t even need new inserts. Just get new pillow covers! I love mixing patterns, so we combined a few Nordic-inspired patterns in different fabrications for a cozy mix. In terms of fabric, we mixed linen with wool and beautiful wovens for an eclectic vibe.

Choose a textured rug

One of the biggest changes we made to the living room was a new rug. The ivory and black mimics the pillow assortment, while the shagginess makes the room feel even cozier. I love how squishy it is as we walk on it! Plus, it’s really lovely how the rug brightens up the small space, especially because these Seattle winter days can be dreary and grey.

Drape sheepskin practically anywhere

For a truly cozy vibe, I love adding a touch of faux fur! We draped a sherpa across the back of the sofa. The animas love hanging out in that spot now, waiting for Sean to come home. And, again, this is another way to add a cozy, Nordic-inspired modern twist.

Use evergreen pieces in your flower arrangement

You know me, I always need a floral arrangement when styling our home. I ordered these from my good friend Sarah of The Stemmery and love that she included some evergreen pieces. This pop of green mimics our accent pillows, while also adding a textural touch. It’s really nice that it’s not over-the-top Christmas-y, but still perfectly festive.

Layer on a wool throw blanket

I usually keep at least one or two throws on our sofa at all times. Not only does Noodle appreciate burrowing into them, but I also enjoy wrapping myself up. To make the room feel cozier, I swapped in textured striped throw blanket. There’s just something about the texture of wool that adds a touch of hygge every time.

I have to say, my absolute favorite addition to our cozy home has been all of the textiles! Normally, I am all about blues, but the addition of these beautiful emerald green pillows really helped to make the living room feel festive. Plus, I really appreciate that the combination of colors, textures, and materials feels ‘holiday,’ but without being overtly ‘Christmas’ if you catch my drift.
